Every Cognite Data Fusion (CDF) project has a data modeling status, stored as dataModelingStatus. The status controls whether the project can use asset-centric APIs, and how applications store and show data. The data modeling status applies to all users in the project. To change the data modeling status for a CDF project, contact your Cognite representative.
  • DATA_MODELING_ONLY is the default status. Use it for new projects and after you upgrade a project to data modeling. Asset-centric write APIs for assets, annotations, and relationships are blocked, and applications use data modeling concepts such as spaces and instances.
  • HYBRID is only for legacy projects. It keeps asset-centric APIs and workflows available while you upgrade to data modeling.

Understanding each status

The status changes what you can configure, and what each application shows.
To preview DATA_MODELING_ONLY behavior for 3D in a HYBRID project, turn on the read-only override described in Verify migrated 360° images. Treat the 3D user interface as read-only while the override is on. Leave the override off when you finish.

Why only some APIs and experiences are restricted

DATA_MODELING_ONLY restricts only some asset-centric APIs and application experiences. The restriction safeguards the user experience against unintended issues caused by remaining data dependencies. Cognite will resolve those dependencies gradually and tighten the restrictions as each dependency is removed. Write access is blocked today for assets, annotations, and relationships. In data modeling, assets map to types in the core data model, diagram parsing annotations map to CogniteDiagramAnnotation, and relationships map to direct relations and edges. Events, sequences, files, and time series stay available. In a DATA_MODELING_ONLY project, files and time series reference instances instead of assets.
